in Weddings

Wedding photography consists of a number of variable factors, the most important being how the bride and groom react to my ideas and me as a person, of course the reverse applies too! If the “click” so to speak is good then 75% of the battle is won!

Debra and Karl were great! They were open and easy to work with, on top of it they had chosen a great venue (Cascade Manor in Paarl) if that was not enough the weather played along too! I really love it when the sky is filled with clouds but not fully overcast, the lighting changes all the time! For video and film this is a disaster but for photography it’s great because we only need the light to be constant for a split second to get the shot!

Like I said the sky was incredible this day, I wanted to show that so I took the following shot with my 17-40mm, with the sky properly exposed Debra and Karl would have been too dark so I put my trusty remote flash just out of shot on the left for fill!

Just look at that waterfall… unreal!! As you may or may not know I always have one or two remote flashes handy. For this shot I put one behind the Karl and Debra to separate them from the background.

It was just about pitch black and all the guests were just about to leave, I loved the ruins that the cortet were playing in but of course taking a shot with flash on camera would have blown out the foreground and taking without flash would have worked but left it looking flat. I decided to bounce the remote flash off the inside wall on the left… pretty funky!

I took this off a tripod at F22 with an exposure of around 20 seconds, in photoshop using layers I then adjusted various areas of the shot for exposure and contrast. I should point out that I have not colourised the sky at all!
