A good cause…

I was approached by Roberta Crumplin a few months ago to do a photo of Veronica with her dog. Veronica has been blind since the age of 2 and her dog Aura is her “seeing eye dog”

The pro bono shot was to be used for one of the months in the 2009 guide dog calendar, a worthy cause indeed. A number of photographers were approached in the same way as I was for the remaining months. A lot of organization on Robertas side and a really great idea!

For the 2009 calendar it was decided to shy away from using the cute Labrador puppy as is traditionally done, instead they wanted photos of blind people with their guide dogs.

I went to meet with Veronica and Aura at work, the Kraaifontein police station. Veronica is a full time secretary and it amazes me how not being able to see to her seems to be nothing but a mere technicality, what an inspiration!

The police station turned out to be anything but conducive to a decent photograph with the exception of a brown all in the one corner of the office. There was a white table which I covered with a piece of black sheeting I carry around with me (very handy!) for lighting I shot with an SB 800 and a 1.2 Octobox off to the one side. I put Aura on the table with Veronica behind her and the wall as a neutral background.
