I was flipping through my photo database this morning when I came across a few shots I took in the Lange township just outside Cape Town a few months ago. Life in the townships is very different from the suburbs and many cultural practices are alive and well.
If you are looking for a barbequed lambs head you won’t need to look far in a South African township! If you are looking for a goat to slaughter for a celebration then then simply pop over to the duplex flat around the corner, there’s a whole veranda/pen filled with them!
Some may consider it barbaric but I think it’s quite amazing, throughout so many of the western influences african identity and culture lives on.
From a photography point of view you would have to be near death or totally blind not to want to click in every direction, unfortunately for this trip we had a number of other locations to capture so we were only there for a short period, in the near future I intend to go back less rushed with camera in hand, stay tuned!
