Added benefit…

in Inside info,Weddings

I did Karen and Andrew’s wedding at The Range in Tokai on Friday. The venue has this stunning little stone chapel that looks really great in photos.

We were moments away from the confetti throw when I realised I could probably put a flash in the doorway behind the couple to highlight the petals in the air. This would not work in bright daylight but the light was low with it being late afternoon and winter approaching.

What I did not realise was the added benefit of the doorway lighting up! I’m not an interior photographer but what I do know is that a doorway leading out of the room you are photographing should never be dark, it has a kind of foreboding feel about it. In a way lighting the chapel doorway should have been obvious ;)

How I got the shot:
I put a Nikon SB28 set at 1/8th on a table in the doorway, this was mounted on a gorillapod and triggered with a pocket wizard. The flash was at 35mm zoom which mean there was more than enough spill light to fill the doorway.

At weddings I like to be as “subtle” as possible but there are some shots that benefit from a bit of military style bellowing and the confetti shot is one of them! I ask as many people as possible to gather around where the bride and groom will be then let them know they should only throw on “1-2-3!”

No one likes to listen to a stranger (I’m not that strange!) but will do so while trying to regain their initial composure. The shot is usually over and looks great before they come to their senses ;)

Tech info:
Canon 5D MII, 24-105 EF IS, 24mm, f200, 1/200th, ISO 640

In retrospect I could have used the 17-40, that being said time was of the essence and the 17-40 can suffer from nasty flare at times.
