I often drive past the Shark Spotter lookout on Boyes drive, today I decided to stop and get a shot of the “Shark Spotter” on duty. His name is Eric and having a chat with him was pretty interesting.
Eric works for shark spotters, originally a community initiative that started after Surf Competition Organizers began asking Car Guards to be on the lookout for sharks.
He told me they run shifts of 5 hours each, with two shifts per day, armed with two way radios Eric is in constant communication with the lifeguards on the beach (seen left of the image)
If a shark is spotted Eric has a remote shark alarm triggering device that will sound alarms on the beach instantly, pretty efficient I think!
Shark Spotters are Situated at a number of spots within false bay and Noordoek, here’s a map!
