Why a Stellenbosch Winter Wedding Works

When most couples plan their wedding, July isn’t usually top of the list. But Louise and Magnus chose a Stellenbosch winter wedding, and what a brilliant decision that turned out to be.

A Cosy Setting at DeWaal Wine Farm

Their day unfolded at DeWaal Wine Farm, one of those hidden gems where the warmth of a roaring fire inside meets the drama of cloudy, peach-tinted skies outside. Winter weddings in Stellenbosch have their own unique magic, and this one was no exception.

A Wedding That Felt Like Family

What stood out most for me wasn’t just the gorgeous light or the location. It was the family feel of the day. All weddings bring people together, but some feel closer, more effortless. This one had that. Laughter, genuine connection, and the kind of joy that makes a day truly flow.

Winter Light and Trusting the Process

Magnus and Louise were amazing. The weather looked like it could turn on us at any moment, but they trusted the process. The result? Those dramatic skies cracked open just enough at sunset to give us the most incredible glow. That soft, peachy hue against dark clouds... it’s something you can’t fake.

Capturing a Moment That Changed Everything

There was one massive tree I’d had my eye on all day. That sky behind it? Perfect. I placed the couple to the side, letting the tree dominate the frame, and used off-camera flash to make them pop. I later removed the flash in post, but the result was one of my favourite images.

I heard afterwards they had been planning to remove that tree, until they saw the photo.

Turns out, photography really can save trees.
