How to book the right photographer

August/24/2020

At some point you will need one. Here are a few pointers on how to book the right photographer. It's an exciting time for photography, the industry that has boomed thanks to the digital era. It has flooded the industry with fresh blood, but most photographers are hacks.

More common than corrupt politicians.

In 2005 there were little more than a handful of Cape Town based photographers. Today you are likely to trip over a photographer if' you're not looking where you're going. The barrier to entry is low, camera technology has advanced to a huge degree too. Yes, these days, photographers are more common than corrupt politicians. There are a lot.

Blind luck and 1000 chances.

Throw a 1000 darts at a dartboard and you're bound to hit the bullseye, eventually. Similarly, taking thousands of photos will eventually return a result. This is where the problem lies. People-with-cameras get one or two excellent pictures and think they've cracked it. A 'photographer' is born.

Hacks are very expensive!

You'll pay way more, one way or the other, if you hire the wrong person.

Avoid the regret before it's too late.

It's only AFTER the shoot, many clients realise they've made a mistake. Weddings and events immediately come to mind. While a wedding only happens once, many people don't have the budget to shoot again. More often than not, sub-par photos end up being reluctantly accepted.

Good photographers are expensive.

Yes they are, and for good reason too. You get what you pay for; and you get it done right the first time.

Hack vs professional photographer: How to book the right photographer

  • What is your budget?
Let's start right here, sure we're all on a budget, but at what cost? Getting it wrong will bring lifelong regret with a wedding and a re-shoot for most other shoots. With corporate, don't forget the number one rule. Return on Investment. Excellent pictures will pay for themselves.

  • Do you like the way you look?
I've seen some shocking hacky photos, where the person in them has their eyes half closed while talking. Or even worse, eating! I don't know about you, but I don't want photos of me eating.
A professional photographer won't include unflattering images.

  • Lighting: Natural light is NOT the answer to everything.
A pro's make use of natural and artificial lighting where needed. We can shoot in full sun or in total darkness.

  • Conditions, windy, raining, dark?
Pro photographers will work with all the above at a moment's notice.

  • Pressure.
Many shoots involve a lot of pressure, and it's not only weddings. For corporate it's working with CEO's who have a 5 minute window and that's it!

  • Personality and the ability to direct.
Are you a model, actor? Do you even like having the camera pointed at you?
A professional photographer will put you at ease and direct you. They will get you to shine on camera while getting you to feel comfortable at the same time.

  • Consistency: pro's produce all the time?
A portfolio includes only the best photos. Truthfully, it doesn't show an accurate picture of average work. A pro can show you Consistency over multiple jobs all the time.

  • The little things.
Rubbish bin in the background? Half-eaten sandwich on the table? Dog with its head between its legs in the corner?
I'm trained to see these things and not wait for everyone else to notice at your expense later on.

Conclusion:

Decide what you want and how important photography is to you. If it isn't then sure, book the hack. If however your photographs are important, you'll be better off hiring the professional right from the get go. It's best to avoid the hack photographer from the get go. If you're how to book the right photographer, remember one thing if you do nothing else. Consistency is key! Check full jobs!
